Jess Gillis

Jess Gillis

Commercial Co-ordinator

“I’m proud to work at Matrix Networks – I believe every member of staff matters and their input is valid.”

Jess has worked with us for nearly five years and is the linchpin in our Commercial Team, ensuring all our legal processes run smoothly.

When Jess joined us, she had legal experience, but not in the utilities sector. However, with the support of her manager, over the past five years she’s grown in confidence and ability to now handle the majority of our legal agreements independently. Specifically looking to further her career, we enrolled Jess on a Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice. She worked hard and passed the course with flying colours and lucky for us, she’s been able to immediately put her new skills into practice in the business. “I think my personal development and studies have been my biggest achievement at Matrix – I feel I’ve been given the opportunity to make my role a career, rather than just a job.”

Jess describes the culture at Matrix as “experienced and ambitious” and feels genuinely part of the team. “My colleagues are all extremely knowledgeable in their respective fields and are all committed to providing the best possible service to our clients. Everyone is very approachable, there’s always an opportunity to learn something new and I like that every day presents a new challenge.”

Peter Armstrong

Peter Armstrong

Multi Utility Designer/Estimator

“Matrix isn’t shy of challenging the ‘old way’ of doing things.”

Peter is a relatively new member of our team but wasted no time in getting his feet firmly under his desk and playing a major role in the success of our business.

“I was made to feel welcome right from my interview – this isn’t a hierarchical place to work and we all work well as a team. Over the past 12 months I’ve become an authorising engineer for core project design, am working towards my IEng status and have gained self-approval authorisation for Matrix’s electrical designs.”

Peter enjoys designing and coming up with engineering solutions for the unique challenges which utilities provide. “Challenging sites can seem stressful, but they’re hugely satisfying to work on. I also enjoy finding ways to improve and adapt methods and processes – to deliver a better result overall. My thanks go to our management for allowing me to progress and implement my improvement ideas.”

Looking to the future Peter feels Matrix has an exciting opportunity ahead of it. “Matrix is a growing and flexible ICP which is at the forefront of utility trends. The company isn’t shy of challenging old methods and as new ideas are introduced, we have the potential to create some significant, positive changes in the utilities sector.”

Rob Whitfield

Rob Whitfield

High Voltage Cable Jointer

“I was proud to do all the cable jointing work on Matrix Networks’ biggest project to date – East Midlands Gateway.”

Rob has been a Jointer for 20 years, working in the UK and overseas. He’s been directly employed by us for the past five years, but was one of our subcontractors before that. And he’s one of the best at what he does – winning New Zealand’s National Cable Jointing Competition in 2007. We’re proud to have him on our team!

Although based at our Warrington office, Rob works all over the country on construction sites, in substations, in holes in the road and in the middle of fields: “I love working outside, working under my own initiative and appreciate the variety my job gives me. Although my title is Cable Jointer, my work includes installing switchgear, testing, electrical and fitting work.”

Rob has seen a fair amount of change in the ICP industry over the past 20 years – the impact of privatisation and the changing reputations of independent operators: “This industry is heavily audited now with thorough quality standards and checks in place. We’re working hard to shake of the negative perceptions which some people still hold – and from what I’ve seen, our clients are very happy with the service we provide. I think Matrix Networks has a bright future ahead of it.”

Chris Hollis

Chris Hollis

Major Projects Design and Tendering Manager

“Even after a decade, every day brings new challenges.”

As one of our longest-serving team members, Chris has not only seen our business grow, but played an active role in its development.

“When I joined Matrix Networks in February 2009, I was its only Designer. Now as Head of Design, I’m immensely proud of what I’ve achieved here and what Matrix has achieved as a business.”

Currently an Incorporated Electrical Engineer and working towards his Chartership qualification, Chris has also enjoyed seeing many of his colleagues progress through the business and further their careers. “We’ve been privileged to to enjoy sustained growth over the last decade and enjoy the new opportunities which are being created all the time.”

Looking to the future, Chris predicts a stronger drive towards renewable energy. “The utility industry is changing and Matrix is a company which is driving change. We’ve come a long way in the last 10 years and with a committed team on board, combined with close collaboration with our customers, the next 10 years could be very exciting.”

Davina Reilly

Davina Reilly

SHEQ Manager

“We’re friendly and relaxed, but all work hard to achieve our company goals.”

Davina has been with us for almost two years, managing our responsibilities and commitment to Safety, Health, Environment and Quality. And, as a Chartered Member of IOSH and of the CQI (Chartered Quality Institute), Davina works hard with our team to maintain our enviable SHEQ record.

Davina’s career history is in the engineering and construction sectors and says she enjoys the variety her job brings each day. Based at our Head Office in Warrington, but also spending a fair amount of her time on site, Davina knows first hand the challenges we face and the protocols we must adhere to as an Independent Connections Provider.

Since joining Matrix, Davina has successfully secured ISO9001certification for the business – with no non-conformities and two ‘Best Practice’ notes. She’s also introduced our ’10 Golden Rules for Site Safety’ – information which we make available to not only our own employees and subcontractors, but other site colleagues as well.

Davina also has some thoughts on how the industry could improve: “It makes sense for there to be more commonality in the management of the three utility areas – electricity, gas and water. I think this would be beneficial for the effective delivery of multi-utility contracts in the future.”

James (Jimmy) Hitchmough

James (Jimmy) Hitchmough

Operations Manager

“The culture at Matrix is one which suits me and how I work.”

From working as a Project Manager for his first five years at Matrix Networks, Jimmy Hitchmough is now an Operations Manager and describes his working environment as ‘Superb’. As comfortable working on site as he is in an office, Jimmy enjoys the variety his job gives him, interacting with his team and solving problems together, as well as meeting new clients and helping them achieve their project goals.

Jimmy has seen the company develop over his eight years with us, and like many of his colleagues, understand the bigger picture: “Matrix has a big future ahead. We’re now in the major project sector, quoting on and winning multi-million pound schemes, so we must be doing something right. But what’s most important to us, is keeping our customers at the heart of what we do. In my opinion, we’re the leading ICP.”

Jimmy’s stand out achievement was the completion of our first ever IP gas connection and meter installation when we were working on an infrastructure scheme for Alderley Park. The challenges of the project gave the entire team a valuable insight into this type of connection and Jimmy remembers the sense of achievement which was enjoyed by all involved, when the project went from quotation stage, to energisation on time and on budget.

Julie Fance

Julie Fance

Assistant Management Accountant

“Our success is down to our team.”

Julie joined us almost 10 years ago from the agricultural sector and puts our success is down to the people she works with. “Matrix Networks has good values and is a very ambitious, positive company. The result is committed employees and a strong team – in my opinion, that’s why we’re successful.”

“I enjoy coming in to work each day, working in a modern environment and within a friendly, hard working team…so much so, that I even completed the Three Peaks Challenge with several of my work colleagues. Can I count that as a career highlight?!”

Julie is currently studying for her AAT Level 2, supported by us, helping her develop her skills and future career.

Laura Park

Laura Park

Project Co-ordinator, Major Projects

“I enjoy the challenges which working on the Major Projects Team throws at me.”

Laura was an administration assistant for a science and technology company before she joined our team seven years ago. We originally took her on as an office administrator, but soon became clear that Laura wanted to get her teeth into the complexities of our Major Projects work.

Local Authorities, Statutory Bodies, Developers, Landowners…Laura has them all coordinated in a ship-shape fashion to ensure our excavation and installation works remain on programme, as contracted by our Clients.

“No two days are ever the same for the Major Projects Team. When I was working on SEGRO Logistics Park: East Midlands Gateway I was helping with the coordination of three different Local Authorities for the successful excavation of over 12km of cabling route. It was an intense project which lasted for 366 days, but I enjoyed the challenge!”

Laura is mainly office-based at our HQ but when she’s not keeping our Major Projects in order, she’s working at a local dance school, ensuring her pupils keep their steps in time.

Rob Lappin

Rob Lappin

Jointer’s Mate

“I didn’t have much experience when I started, but now I’m fully qualified and enjoy my job.”

Rob worked as a joiner in the building industry for 10 years before joining our team. He didn’t have much experience at the time, but was eager to learn and three years’ later, he’s a fully qualified Jointer’s Mate and very good at what he does.

With his sights firmly set up career progression, Rob wants to gather the training he needs to become a Jointer one day – with his own Jointer’s Mate working alongside him: “The goals are set high here and I see ambition in everyone I work with. I have a good working relationship with all my colleagues on site and we all work hard, striving to complete jobs on time and to a high standard.

“Matrix has grown significantly in the few years I’ve been here, and I’m looking forward to the opportunities which the future might bring.”
