• Project

    Amazon Fulfilment Centre

  • Location

    Tilbury, Essex

  • Client

    McLaren Construction Group PLC

  • Contract

    Dual-utility solution

  • Background

Online retailer Amazon had plans to open a 2m sq ft fulfilment centre in the Tilbury Docks area of Essex. Part of the London Distribution Park, the facility was set to create more than 1,500 new jobs and be the 13thof its kind in the UK.

  • Our brief

We’d previously worked with McLaren so with knowledge of our capabilities, they were keen to see how we’d deliver on the very specific requirements of the Amazon brief:

Electricity: A new 33/11kV primary substation to supply 8MVA. A 100m offsite excavation route for 33KkV cabling and a bespoke substation design to enable shared ownership of an 11klV board.

    Gas: A metered gas service

  • How we delivered

We appointed one of our most experienced Project Managers to the contract, giving him the responsibility of keeping our installation programme on track and coordinating all subcontracted trades. We also seconded members of our inhouse design team to work on site, enabling them to be fully immersed in the project and address any issue as they arose. As a result, the development was energised within just nine months. And as for the bespoke substation, we designed and delivered it.
